about

Like many of our pieces, when we began recording this piece, we didn’t know what it was about. Many times, we don’t know what our pieces are actually about until we’ve finished recording them and the piece shows us what it is. It wasn’t until we recorded the basic track and were listening to the playback in the studio in 2016 and hearing the pain and fear in the music that we understood this piece was about what kids experienced in the Residential School/Boarding School system and how the fallout from this effected our families and communities in massive ways.

In Indian Country, we have known about the abuse and deaths that occurred in these schools all along. We know that there is a connection between things happening right now and what occurred then; and how the Residential Schools created intergenerational trauma and created the contemporary disproportionate rates of Native children in the child welfare system (in Washington state at 3.2x and Alaska at 2.5x). The effects are ongoing right now and this is not simply something that happened in the past. What is new in 2021 is the confirmation of the number of dead children at these sites and Non-Natives becoming aware of the extent of deaths at these schools.

This song is to honor the victims of these schools, from the children who did not survive there, to those who did survive, to today’s young people effected by the intergenerational trauma created by these schools. From Kamloops to Tulalip to Carlisle to Old Sun.

In honor of these victims and survivors, we are making this song, “Residential School” (from our upcoming album “WOOch”) available for free download.
